Just a point, I know its only a bit of fun but it's not very clever to take the piss out of the customers too much on your site (Pauls page). I bought a Speed Triple from Woods in Abergele because the staff in Bill Smiths in Chester were too busy posing and chatting to their tyre kicking mates than talk to me about the bike I wanted to buy for cash. They couldn't be bothered to answer my questions and basically their attitude was crap. This may not seem so insane until I tell you that I live in Chester about 10 minutes from the showroom. The guys in Woods were falling over themselves to sell me a machine and even fitted some after-market parts that I had bought for free before I picked it up. I never told the guys in Chester that I had the money on me, but I did, and they missed a sale because of their attitude. You may not care, but I just thought that if they couldn't be bothered to answer questions, what would be the attitude if I had a warranty claim! |

26/06/03 Our Reply
Hi Martin,
Welcome to Pauls Page. With your permission I would like to post both your e-mail and this response on the web site.
Martin, Thanks for contacting us through our site it's nice to know that someone out there is reading it after all the work that goes into producing it and without feedback from our customers it is difficult to know if we have got it right! Firstly please accept my sincere apologies for your recent experience at Chester, although we are two separate companies obviously their actions reflect upon us and vice versa. Accordingly I have passed a copy of your message on to Mark Smith one of the directors at Chester, who I am sure will respond to you directly. We here in Bangor pride ourselves on our excellent customer relations and prompt service to anybody who walks through the door and indeed we do have many customers who we would be happy to call mates. I would be very interested to know how you decide who is a "tyre kicker" and who is a genuine customer with money in his pocket, because after 20 odd years in the trade I haven't got a fool proof method yet (I wish, it would make my job so much easier!!).
We view the web site as an extension to the shop giving a way to contact us 24-7, showing a range of the products and services we provide and hopefully entertainment as well, initially through Paul's Pages (although other features are planned) and our experiences from this side of the counter. Yes I would agree that we do take the piss a bit, but nothing is posted on the web site without the other parties permission. In actual fact the owner of the DRZ400 is a Motocrossing mate of Andy's (the owner of this business) and the CBR6 owner was more than happy to see the picture posted on the web. If you think about it the last thing any business needs is to upset it's customers. We are all motorcyclists here, I don't even own a car! so please be assured we treat all our customers as we would wish to be treated, indeed if you find yourself near Bangor, while you are having your Triumph serviced perhaps?, please feel free to drop by for a chat.
Yours sincerely

Hello mate, Just been browsing the 'Paul's pages', they're pretty good. I think it's an excellent idea that you put a little humour and piss-taking in there. If I have any stories I can contribute, then I'll email them to you. Later Loz |

Hi Again, I am including links to Martins pictures rather than putting them directly on the page as they are not pretty and I feel I should warn you of this before you see them! Paul |

11/05/2004 Hi Paul. Well, we made it back home from Betws on the day after you left us to head back home. The Fairy Glen is an INTERESTING hotel. A little quaint and stuck in a kind of 60s time warp! Friendly enough though. The XTZ ran like a train all the way home but I noticed that the rhs indicators had both blown, as had the tail and brake lights so I obviously followed you all the way from your house to Betws with no rear light. Oh well . I am now trying to work out what to do about the tacho which packed up at the same time. A quick wiring check will be the first thing. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks very much for all your help in getting the old bus back and working again. It really was way beyond the call of duty and immensely appreciated. And please thank Steve again for his generosity in donating his rectifier. This has caused me another problem now though, as I realised after listening to Steves bike running that mine sounds like a dustbin full of old nails so a check on the camchain and adjuster and then tappets will be the next thing on the agenda. I had a quick look at your page on your website and the story about the 250 twin with the petrol in the oil problem amused me as I almost had the same problem but for good fortune. I took the carbs off a couple of weeks ago after storing the bike all winter and I luckily decided against starting the bike up first and took the carbs off. As I lifted the carbs off the head stubs, petrol poured out of one carb and on checking, I realised what had happened. I hadnt turned the petrol tap off properly and the needle valve in the float bowl wasnt sealing properly. Consequently the petrol had leaked down the throat of the downdraft carb and into the engine. Luckily the valves were all closed so the petrol completely filled the inlet tract and carb up to the float bowl level. It took me ages to get all the petrol out again! I also have a piston which is much better than the one in your picture. I bought an XR600 Honda 3 years ago and rode it back from Wakefield to Cirencester. It seemed to run OK and didnt smoke at all. All in all it seemed to be quite a good buy. The next day I took it out for a ride and after 10 miles it seized solid. When I checked, there was about a cup full of oil in the engine. The piston was obviously knackered when I bought the bike so the seller filled the engine with synthetic oil which doesnt smoke! (bastard) Anyway the seizure ripped the front skirt off the piston and then smashed it around a few times before the engine stopped. All the aluminium from the skirt was ground to a mixture of dust and small pieces by the primary gears in the engine which completely knackered everything. Credit though to the conrod which didnt even bend!! That is motorcycling for you. Never a dull moment. Cheers

Hi Paul you might like to put the following comments on your pages for all to see.
I have recently got back in biking after a fifteen year break due to a car(cage) accident involving myself the rear of my car and the front a of motorised PANDA(Think about it) which resulted in me sustaining injury and a life lasting disability.
I have ridden many different machines through out my biking life from nifty fifty's to roaring Harley's. Well fifteen years ago the last machine I had was a GS550E great bike and I thought to myself what good bike to see if I can still ride (does the world go round, silly boy) you guessed it duck to water syndrome I believe someone called it.
Well anyway 8 months after buying and second hand GS550E 1979 CLASSIC I found I needed something a lot bigger this was mainly due to my size VERY BIG 29.5 STONE but falling, so I started looking around, eventually I came across Bill Smith Motorcycles in Bangor North Wales where I meet Paul the sales manager, but our meeting had nothing to do with biking but a lot to do with taking which I might add I am very good at, and if ever you meet me do not ask me about Amateur Radio unless you have at least an hour to sit sipping coffee.
Right back the point eventually Paul contacted me say he had just taken in a Yamaha Dragstar and maybe I would like to look it over, this I did. ( Now I have to say this and you shall see why later) When I first looked at it I said ya Harley look-alike ( you know the normal blind blinkered bigoted response) but carried on anyway thinking some not very nice thoughts along the way, Paul said to eventually well take it for a test ride then, which I do not mind telling you P****D ON MY BONFIRE. The necessary form filling in took place then a very nervous me took to the road on this armchair ride, that's right you read correct you eyes are not playing tricks on you, a Harley rider praising a Japanese V Twin, excellent ride, powerful, responsive. Well now my bonfire was well and truly alight again but for different reasons, the worst thing about that day was giving the bike back to Bill Smith Motorcycles.
Unfortunately I was not able to purchase that bike cost was out of my reach, but as a direct result of Paul help and encouragement I am within the next 7 days taking delivery (colleting) of a 30 month old Suzuki Intruder VL-800 Volusia she has all the low down grunt needed to shift my F*T A**E around. So thank you Paul and God bless, Which brings me to the final and for me most important part of this little editorial. I AM A CHRISTIAN I WILL NOT GET IN YOUR FACE ABOUT IT, BUT IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY I WILL SHARE MY EXPERIENCE OF THE LORD JESUS WITH YOU. GOD BLESS ALL WHO READ THIS ARTICLE AND ANY QUESTIONS ON THE LATER PART PLEASE ASK PAUL FOR MY E-MAIL.
Will be calling to see you this afternoon Paul.
